Agra is amply evident in many historic monuments in and around the city.
Although the history of the city of Agra is linked to the Mughal dynasty,
many other leaders have also contributed to the rich history of Agra.
Agra was founded by Sikandar Lodhi (Lodhi dynasty; Sultanate of Delhi)
in the 16th century. Babur (founder of the Mughal dynasty) has also
spent some time in Agra and introduced the concept of square Persian-style
gardens. The emperor Akbar built the Agra Fort; Jahangir beautified
the palaces and gardens. Shah Jahan marked the zenith of Mughal architecture,
when he built the Taj. After the Mughal-era’s history of Agra,
it saw the state of the Jats, Marathas and the British taking over the
city.
